Akrotiri is located on the Southern Peninsula of Cyprus, 20 km from Limassol, south of the salt lake. By terms of the 1960 Treaty of Establishment that created the independent Republic of Cyprus, the UK retained full sovereignty and jurisdiction over Akrotiri, which is also referred to as the Western Sovereign Base Area. Most of the residents work in the SBA.
