Lakiya, with a population of around 6400 people, is located to the north of Beer Sheva. It was announced a local council in 1996, one of the seven Bedouin towns that were recognized by the government for the Bedouins of the Negev desert. In the past the Bedouins used to live a nomadic life. The family was basically self-sufficient, living mainly off their own livestock. Today half of the Bedouin population of the Negev are living in permanent homes.
