Carlsbad is a large coastal city in San Diego County, 30 miles north of the city of San Diego. According to the 2000 census, the Carlsbad ZIP codes, 92008 and 92009, contain 78,717 residents.
The name Carlsbad is an Anglicized version of Karlsbad. It was named this in the 1880's to promote the town as a spa. The water from a well dug there was touted as having a mineral content almost identical to that of the famous spa in Karlsbad, Bohemia, now part of Czechoslovakia.
