Coloma is located along the South Fork of the American River, on Highway 49 in El Dorado County. This small town in the rural Sierra foothills was the site of the gold discovery in January, 1848, that triggered California's 1849 gold rush.

Today Coloma is known for Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, educational programs about gold rush history and the foothills environment, and whitewater rafting and kayaking on the South Fork.

In 2000, Coloma established a sister city relationship with the Township of Clunes, Victoria, Australia, site of the first gold discovery in Victoria, which triggered a gold rush in that area.
