Salinas is the seat of Monterey county. It was begun in 1822 when Mexico seceded from Spain and began granting lands, and was incorporated as a city in 1874. The city's name comes from the Spanish word for a salty marsh. The population in 2000 was 143,920. Location is 36°40'40"N 121°39'16"W; elevation is 53 feet.
