Derby [New Haven County] Connecticut was settled in 1651 and named in 1675 from the town and county in England. It was incorporated as a city in 1893. Its Indian name is Paugasset or Paugasuck.

Area, 5.4 sq. miles. Population, est., 11,942. Voting districts, 3. Principal industries, telecommunications, photography, printing, and manufacture of castings, forgings, nail clippers and manicure implements.

Derby is considered a part of the New Haven Metro Area.
