Appanoose means "a chief when a child." It is in the southern part of the state and is bounded by Monroe, Wapello, Davis, Schuyler, Putnam, and Wayne counties. The present land area is 496 square miles, and the population in 2000 was 13,721. In the early 20th century the county was one of the main coal mining areas of the state.
