Farnsworth & Brush first built a sawmill in this area in 1836, and the settlement was first given a post office in May of 1863. In 1871, the railroad reached the area and the population grew. Named after the American Indian tribe from whom the federal government obtained the remainder of the Upper Peninsula in 1836, Menominee was incorporated as a city in 1883. Menominee is located along US Hwy 41, north of and across the river from its sister city of Marinette, Wisconsin.
