The village of Gowanda lies on the border of Cattaraugus and Erie counties. Gowanda, an Indian word, meaning "Beautiful Valley among the Hills", is used to describe the area. The surrounding countryside is generally described as rolling farmland and woodland. The Village proper is located in the floor of the valley with residential areas reaching up onto the bordering hills.
