Located on the south side of the York River next to the Coleman Bridge, Yorktown, the seat of York County, VA, is home to the battlefields where American Independence was won. On October 19, 1781 (Yorktown Day), General Cornwallis and the British surrendered to the Americans led by George Washington and the French led by General Lafayette. Since then, only a Civil War battle has been fought in Yorktown. Today, the battlefields and town are visited by many tourists and locals alike. Population: 220
