Known to the U.S. Census as the Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News Metropolitan Area, this area consists of over 1.6 million people, a lot of water, and parts of two states. The area is at the junction of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, stretching from Mathews County on the Middle Peninsula to Currituck County, NC across Pimilco Sound from the Outer Banks to Isle of Wight and James City Counties inland on the James River.
