Clunes, a rural town located about 25 minutes north of Ballarat, was the site of the first official gold discovery in Victoria, made by James Esmoud on July 1, 1851. Esmoud's discovery triggered Victoria's world famous gold rushes.

Though Clunes' population today numbers less than 1000, the town has preserved over 50 buildings of historic significance. In 2000, the town established a "sister city" association with Coloma, California, USA, site of the first gold discovery in California.

In addition to its historic significance, Clunes features many local wineries, Mount Beckworth and other outdoor attractions.
