Antarctica is the Earth's fifth largest and highest (on average) continent, which doubles in size during winter. It is also the coldest, windiest, and driest continent with some areas receiving no rain for up to a hundred years. During summer, more solar radiation reaches the surface of Antarctica than is received at the Equator over an equivalent period. Antarctica contains many volcanoes, some of them still active, and the world's largest glacier system reaching 300 km into the interior and up to 80 km wide at its mouth. The continent is the only ice and land mass within the Antarctic Circle and is governed internationally by the Antarctic Treaty of 1961. It is uninhabited except for scientific bases and large flocks of sea birds including penguins. This category contains Internet sites that are about or located on Antarctica.
