Classification of the Asian Elephant Elephas maximus
Mammalia; Eutheria; Proboscidea; Elephantidae; Elephas

There are three recognized sub-species: Elephas maximus indicus (Indian Elephant), Elephas maximus maximus (Sri Lankan Elephant) and Elephas maximus sumatranus (Sumatran Elephant).
