Incense first came to Japan with the Buddhist monks. The first form was chipped mixtures called Sho koh. Later, kneaded balls (Nerikoh), and lastly Joss sticks. Secular burning came later and developed into the Incense Ceremony called Koh doh. Koh doh is seeing a revival today both in Japan and in the west.
