Fiercely resistant to European cultures, the Kickapoo (also spelled Kikapoo or Kikapu) never assimilated, preferring to continue relocating further southward from their original Michigan-Illinois homeland. Today, about 3000 Kickapoo live in three groups in the US (Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas) and one in Mexico (Chihuahua). The Kickapoo and Shawnee were once the same tribe, but had split by the time of European conquest.
