Joseph was the favorite son by the favored wife (Rachel) of the Hebrew patriarch Jacob (Israel). This status, coupled with his seemingly bottomless arrogance, led his brothers into considering murder before selling him into slavery. He later became a rescuer of Egypt and the savior of his family during a severe seven-year famine. The Biblical account is found in Genesis, spread throughout chapters 30, 37, and 39-50.
