The Academy Award for Original Music Score is presented to the best substantial body of music written specifically for a film by a composer or composers. The film's score must be original music, forming part of the film's soundtrack. This category is for links to ODP categories for composers who have won the Academy Award for Best Original Score, which is different from the Best Original Song category.

The Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, are presented annually by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry.

Please note: From 1934-1937, the head of the film studio's music department rather than the actual composer or composers received the award.
Some years, two separate Academy Awards were given for Best Original Score to differentiate between composing for a comedy, dramatic, or musical picture. Separate Oscars were also given for other differences, including "Song Score and its Adaptation" or "Adaptation Score."
From 1995 to 1998, songwriters and lyricists along with orchestral underscore composers were also eligible in the "Comedy or Musical Score" category.
