Business

The Business component of Curlie generally lists and categorizes English-language sites that cover:

Business as an activity:

  • Sites covering industrial and commercial activities involving the exchange of commodities, services, or financial resources.
  • Sites offering supporting services, information and resources to business and business people, such as trade associations, educational institutions and training programs, business and economic news, events, etc.

Business as an entity:

  • Official web sites for and about corporations and commercial enterprises (including subsidiaries) that manufacture, distribute, market and sell goods and services to other businesses (B2B) and/or consumers (B2C). Note: If the purpose of the site is to serve as a Shopping destination for consumers (or consumers and businesses), the site should be listed in the Shopping branch.
  • Sites that exist solely to provide information about a company and its goods and services. Note: a company's brand name sites that focus on providing information to consumers are listed under Home: Consumer Information.
  • Sites that focus on the theoretical, practical or operational aspects of a business enterprise: accounting, finance, human resources, management, marketing, etc.

Sites generally not listed in the Business category:

  • Online shopping: Sites that exist primarily to sell goods and services directly to the consumer should be listed in the Shopping category. See the Shopping category description and FAQ for more detail.
  • Commercial sites (particularly "dot.coms") whose main purpose is to provide information and resources to the consumer, as an end-user of the product or services (e.g. Google, ConsumerSearch.com, XML.com, MP3.com, etc.)
  • Sites that focus on providing information to consumers are listed under Home: Consumer Information.
  • Local businesses: Sites for inherently local businesses -- such as types of business that are commonly found in most localities and serve primarily the people and businesses in that area -- are in most cases listed exclusively in Regional categories.

Accounting

This category contains sites pertaining to the accounting profession.
Sites submitted to this category cover the accounting profession in general, and do not focus on a particular world region. Regionally focused sites - including those covering a particular US state or area - should be submitted to the appropriate category in the branch.

Aerospace and Defense

The Aerospace and Defense category comprises industries and establishments primarily engaged in one or more of the following:

  • Development, manufacture, and distribution of civil and military aircraft, missiles, space vehicles, military equipment, and the auxiliary equipment, parts and supplies.
  • Development, manufacture, and distribution of aerospace engines, propulsion units, and auxiliary equipment or parts.
  • Development and production of aerospace and military product prototypes.
  • Aircraft conversion (i.e., major modifications to systems).
  • Complete aircraft or propulsion systems overhaul and rebuilding (i.e., periodic restoration of aircraft to original design specifications).
  • Services that specifically support these industries (e.g., consulting, marketing, associations, etc.).

In general, the aerospace industry is engaged in the research, development, and manufacture of flight vehicles, ranging from unpowered gliders, sailplanes and lighter-than-air craft up though space vehicles. The term aerospace is derived from the words aeronautics and spaceflight.

Sites which sell but do not manufacture aircraft parts and components should be sent to the Aviation Spares category.

Sites which sell new or second hand aircraft should be sent to the Aviation Sales category.

Machine shops which do not specialise in aerospace components should be sent to one of the categories in the Machining section.

Agriculture and Forestry

The Agriculture and Forestry sector comprises industries engaged in growing crops, raising animals, harvesting timber, and harvesting fish and other animals from a farm, ranch, or their natural habitats.

The companies in this sector are often described as farms, ranches, dairies, greenhouses, nurseries, orchards, or hatcheries. This sector includes supporting industries such as equipment, supplies, consulting and administrative services, etc.

Arts and Entertainment

The entertainment industry, or "show business" as it is sometimes called, includes the motion picture, television, radio, music, theatre, and theme park industries. In addition, it includes the entertainment-related aspects of several other industries such as sports, fashion, and gaming.
This category includes sites which concern the behind-the-scenes, business-to-business aspects of the arts and entertainment industry, including management, booking, production, distribution, equipment, and marketing. Non-entertainment industry business-related sites will not be listed here. We ask that you submit to the most appropriate subcategory; your compliance will improve your listing time.

Retail sites whose primary purpose is selling merchandise should be submitted to an appropriate subcategory of Shopping.

For websites and portfolios of painters, sculptors, actors, musicians and other artists, please find an appropriate subcategory under Arts.

Companies who specialize in items for home decor (such as vases, fountains, metalwork, etc.) do not belong here. Please find an appropriate subcategory under Home and Garden instead.

The Business Associations category only lists sites for trade associations which have global membership across multiple business industries.

Automotive

This category will list the companies that manufacture and support the manufacture of automotive products.

Automotive is defined as vehicles that are self powered such as cars, trucks, racing cars, snowmobiles and motorcycles.

Please submit sites about the automotive industry to this category.

Sites about general manufacturing, even if the products is used by the automotive industry, should be submitted to Industrial Goods and Services.

Please submit sites primarily selling products online to the most appropriate category within the Shopping branch as they will not be listed here.

This is not a category for consumer services or car dealerships. Please submit those sites into appropriate subcategories of Regional or Recreation: Autos.

Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals

Biotechnology refers to the use of cellular and molecular processes in drug discovery and manufacturing, research, and biologically engineered food production.

Pharmaceuticals include over-the-counter and prescription medications, vitamins and nutritional supplements. The term also covers drug delivery systems and diagnostic compounds.

Sites listed in this category and its subcategories will represent companies involved in product development and marketing.

If your site is concerned more with non-commercial research, study or information, it belongs in Science/Biology/Biotechnology/ or Health/Pharmacy.

All sites with online sales to consumers belong in Shopping, and will not be listed here.

Business and Society

The Business and Society category contains sites which pertain to the interaction between businesses, organizations, and governmental bodies. Most sites in this category will focus on the social, economic, or environmental impact of businesses, while many will deal with ethics and social responsibility as it pertains to business.
Sites about societal issues not directly related to business should be submitted to a subcategory of Society. Sites for businesses will not be listed in this category, but should be submitted to the specific category for the type of business.

Business Services

The Business Services sector broadly covers establishments and industries that provide professional and administrative support services to a variety of businesses (e.g. B2B) and organizations (e.g. B2G).
In some cases, these companies also provide services to consumers, but providing services to other enterprises is their main focus.
The common theme in this category are B2B industries where human capital is the major input. The companies classified in this sector sell expertise.

The Business Services hierarchy is implicitly grouped into the following two areas.
  1. Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services: These activities require a high degree of expertise and training. Much of the expertise requires academic degrees, though not in every case. Activities performed include: legal advice and representation; accounting, bookkeeping, and payroll services; architectural, engineering, and specialized design services; computer services; consulting services; information and research services; corporate communication services; translation and interpretation services; and other professional, scientific, and technical services.

Consumer Goods and Services

The Consumer Goods and Services sector category includes industries and companies focused on manufacturing, distributing and marketing finished products that will be used by the general public. Also included here are links to categories covering personal service industries and companies that provide services to the consumer market (note: most of the consumer services categories exist elsewhere in Curlie, and are represented here by @links).
  • Industries and companies focused on providing professional and administrative services primarily to other businesses are listed under Business/Business_Services.
  • Producers and supplies of the materials, substances, components, machinery and other industrial technology used in manufacturing goods are listed under Business/Industrial Goods and Services.  However, producers and suppliers of materials, substances, components, machinery and other industrial technology used in the manufacture of specific consumer goods are listed under Consumer Goods and Services (e.g. a manufacture of  fans for use in home appliances; or water heaters for consumer as well as commercial use).

Customer Service

The Customer Service category is a directory of resource sites containing information related to the broad field of customer service (including customer satisfaction, technical support, etc.).

This category will contain a combination of informational sites broadly related to customer service theory and its practical application, of interest to customer service related professionals in all industries and occupations. It will also contain resource listings of practitioners (companies, governmental, academic) engaged in some aspect of customer service (consulting, facilitation, training, etc.). Check subdirectories for specific topics.

This category lists sites which operate on a national or international scale.

Businesses serving a specific region should go to Regional and submit to the Business category in the region served.

Submitting a site to the wrong category or too broad a category will only hinder your sites placement in the directory.

This Electronics and Electrical sector category includes industries and companies that manufacturer electronic and electrical components, equipment, and hardware, and manufacturers of materials, supplies, tools, components and equipment that are specific to the manufacture of electronics and electrical components.

Sites for industries and companies that manufacture, distribute and sell finished electronics and electrical products (e.g. home appliances, radios, TVs, etc.) are not listed here.

Only a few companies in the world qualify to be listed on the main page. Please submit the company's primary URL to the category that represents the company's primary focus.

Employment

The Employment category focuses on bringing employees and employers together. This includes resources and establishments engaged in one or more of the following disciplines:

Hospitality

The Hospitality sector category  is broadly defined to include industries and establishments offering customers with lodging and/or food services. Also included are establishments offering supplies and equipment, and services that support these industries.

Excluded from this sector are civic and social organizations, amusement and recreation parks, theaters, and other recreation or entertainment facilities and venues providing food and beverage services.

Also excluded from this sector are establishments that offer event planning and production services, which may include accommodation and food service activities.  Examples of companies in this sector include conference, exhibit, and meeting planners. Sites offering event planning services are listed under Business/Business_Services/Event_Planning_and_Production/

Sites for individual lodging establishments (e.g. hotels, motels, B&Bs, etc.) and individual restaurants, bars and nightclubs are listed in the Regional branch.  However, the Hospitality category does list sites for regional, national and international chains, corporations and holding companies.

Human Resources

Human Resources covers a range of topics, all dealing with the "People" aspects of running a business. HR has 2 major components HRM (management of people) and HRD (learning and development for staff). Typically larger companies have their own HR department but may buy in specific services from a specialist firm. Smaller companies may opt to have all their HR managed by an external HR company. Business/Human_Resources contains sites for companies specializing in Human Resource services. This may be as an HR service provider to other companies or as a provider of advice/resources/consultancy to HR departments. It has been divided into several subcategories for companies specializing in a particular aspect of HR. Those offering a more general service can be found at the top level.

This category is for sites about Information Technology, a term which refers to the use of a variety of computer and other technologies, and their associated business practices, to support efficient and effective business operations

Major Companies

Overview

Although in the early years of the directory there was an alphabetical listing of web sites for publicly traded and major privately held companies throughout the world as sub-categories here, as Curlie developed all Business websites have been allocated to the appropriate industry sector, so the sub-categories here are redundant.

Public Companies

Sites for all public companies whose securities are traded on one of the world's major stock exchanges may be listed elsewhere in Business and, so long as the information is included on the website, also in the appropriate sub-category of the locality of the Head Office in Regional.

Private Companies and Other Types of Companies

Major private companies and other major business enterprises should be selected from objectively published rankings, such as Hoover's 500, Forbes, and 500 Private.  Do not list companies that appear on lists where the company must pay or apply to be listed (e.g. Inc. 500).
The tick number may be added at the end of the description is the listing in the Industry sector within the Business category tree.

This category lists only sites that provide financial information and data about corporations and other business enterprises.  This includes corporate reports, financial statements, and other data of interest to investors.
Individual corporate sites, or consumer information sites for a single company will not be listed here, and should be suggested instead to the appropriate industry sub-category of  Business.

Companies which manufacture end products, for example scientific glassware or rubber gaskets, do not belong in this category. Please find a the most specific category related to that product or industry elsewhere in Curlie.

Companies which provide custom manufacturing or machining services do not belong here either, even if they specialize in a certain material. Instead, they belong in an appropriate subcategory of Business: Industries: Manufacturing: Casting, Molding, Machining.

Web sites that have no English version available should not be listed here. Instead, find the appropriate language category under World.

Mining and Drilling

The Mining and Drilling sector comprises industries and companies involved in extracting naturally occurring mineral solids, such as coal and ores; liquid minerals, such as crude petroleum; and gases, such as natural gas; quarrying, well operations, beneficiating (e.g., crushing, screening, washing, and flotation), and other preparation customarily performed at the mine site, or as a part of mining activity.

The "Opportunities" category is generic and intended for general information about business opportunities for individuals, and general approaches to opportunities in business. For Web sites and companies involved in specific aspects of business opportunities including sales, employment, jobs, MLM, Internet, home-based, franchises, distributing, internet and partners programs, and so on, please see those sub-categories.
This category is not for affiliate sites, resellers, ''get-paid-to-surf'' links, or MLM''s. Those submissions are deleted.

Independent representatives, distributors, or resellers of multi-level marketing (MLM) systems or pyramids are not listed in the directory. Submissions of sites of this nature will be rejected and flagged for deletion.

Publishing and Printing

The Publishing_and_Printing sector category covers two distinct, yet very interdependent industries.

Publishing: Entities engaged in publishing and distributing newspapers, magazines, other periodicals, and books, as well as electronic materials.

Printing: Establishments involved in the manufacture, production, and distribution of print products, such as newspapers, books, periodicals, business forms, greeting cards, and other materials. This subsector includes printing on clothing because the production process for that activity is printing, not clothing manufacturing.

Retailers listed in Business vs. Shopping

Corporate sites for regional, national, and international retail chains, corporations, and holding companies may be listed within Business if they are focused on providing information about the retailer rather than functioning as a consumer shopping destination.

For example, https://corporate.walmart.com/ is WalMart's corporate site, and may be listed in the Business branch. However, https://www.walmart.com/ is their consumer shopping site, and would thus be listed in Shopping.

When a retailer's site functions as both a corporate site and a shopping destination, the site is generally listed only in the Shopping branch (e.g. https://www.landsend.com/).
